The Search For a Missing Mother Turned Up Her Secret Other Life
Small town Colorado resident Paige Birgfeld seemed to have it all. She had her own business, wonderful children and a doting husband. Yet underneath her apparently placid life lay a deep dark secret. When she went missing, friends, relatives and her spouse were shocked to discover she had another life.
1. Her First Love
Howard Ron Biegler was Paige’s true first love. They were high school sweethearts. The two decided to marry. However, like many young married couples, their relationship did not work out. The two were quickly divorced. Despite this, they remained good friends even after the marriage ended.
2. Married Again
After her first marriage ended so early Paige sought love again. This time, she married Rob Birgfeld. Together, the two settled down and started a family. Paige seems content in her new life with a loving husband, kids she was happy to raise and a new business venture.

As soon as she agreed to meet with her old love, she apparently set off on a journey to meet with him leaving her kids behind with a beloved, trusted babysitter. However, a short while later, it started to become obvious that something might have gone wrong.

Her babysitter quickly became concerned when Paige failed to come home. She decided she would call the police to report a missing person. After a few days of looking for, they found an important clue. Her bright red car was parked in an empty parking lot.

In addition to being close to her own children, Paige was also adored by her many friends and relatives. Her brother beloved her. As a man of science with a medical practice that specialized in the care of children, he quickly became worried when she wasn’t there.

When she did not return, her father also became involved. Her father Frank learned that his daughter was missing from the police. He was stunned to learn she had not been home in the last few days. He quickly became determined to help find the truth.

While most of items were missing from the car, one thing was there. This would prove a crucial clue in the coming search. The planner had lots of details about her activities. However, the last four pages of the meticulous planner had been torn from away.

When it became clear that she was missing, the police realized that they need to organize a search party to look for her. Mesa County, where she lived, is a huge county. Fortunately, the police had lots of help. A search party was quickly organized by volunteers.

One of the first places that police started to look for her was the Gunnison River. Divers and trained dogs had a close look at the river, hoping to find a clue of some kind or at least a body. Despite their best efforts, they found nothing.

As Paige did not return home and her car was found burning, it was becoming obvious that searchers would need to expand their search to many other places. This was a daunting task even for many people as there are many places to hide in this county.
19. Careful Planning
Careful planning was necessary to cover all the territory in the area. Volunteers quickly decided on the best way to search as much of the area as possible as quickly as possible. Time was of the essence they felt, worried that any further evidence might also be burned.
20. A Secret Starts Comes to Life
As searchers continued their hunt for Paige, they also began to explore other possible explanations for her disappearance. A very mysterious set of of phone calls came to life during the search. These calls would have implications for the entire case and her secret.
21. Getting the Word Out
In addition to searching the county, the police and her friends now decided to see if they could find more about her double life. To that end, they made up fliers indicating they were looking for people who might know about her mysterious private life.
22. Showing Off Her Body
As police looked at her phone, they also found other potential clues to her whereabouts. Her phone calls included calls to other men including men she was obviously not dating. She had a nice body and it was clear she wanted to show it off.
23. A Suspect Comes to Light
One of the contacts on her phone identified himself as Jim and called her Carrie. However, the call was made from a throw away phone with little detail, making it hard to find him. Fortunately, good police work quickly helped narrow down a list of suspects and found out Jim’s real name.
24. Lester Jones
There was no Jim. Instead, there was Lester Jones. He had a long criminal record including convictions for sexual assault. Investigators wanted to know why this deeply troubled man was in contact multiple times with Paige before she went missing. They would soon discover her incredible secret life.
25. Models, Inc.
As it turned out, Paige had a secret life. She ran upscale an escort business called Models Inc. Naming herself Carrie, she was the sole employee. She promised many services to her clients including nude pictures. She was clearly the Carrie Jim had been trying to contact.
26. Additional Efforts
In the immediate days after it was clear she was probably not coming back, many volunteers continue to search. They put up even more fliers in the area, hoping for additional clues about her whereabouts. It would take a long time for the case to finally get closure.
27. Paige is Still Missing
Despite their best efforts to find her, Paige was still missing. It would take lots of detective work and even more help from her group of friend to help locate her. Five years after she went missing, in 2012, her remains were finally found by a hiker in a nearby town.
28. Lester Faces Justice
After her body was found, police arrested Lester. During the first trial, the jury could not reach a verdict. Fortunately the evidence was obvious connecting him to her death in a second trial. He was finally convicted and sentenced to life without parole in 2016.
